Since 1 July 2026 Germany has applied the 2026 garnishment table, published in the Federal Law Gazette (2026 I No. 80) and valid until 30 June 2027. The first €1,587.40 of monthly net pay is now exempt, up from €1,555. The first person you support under a legal duty adds €597.42, the second to fifth add €332.83 each. Of the net pay above that allowance, a creditor may take seven tenths when you have no dependants, five tenths with one, and one tenth less for each further person; everything above €4,866.30 is attachable. Example: on €2,500 net, €638.82 can be taken with no dependants and €157.59 with one child. In a bank account, a P-account protects €1,590 a month with no application, more with a certificate. The calculator gives the figure without sign-up or contact details, and it reproduces every row exactly as printed in the Federal Law Gazette.

How the calculator works and what we checked · Who runs this site

Why the official table and not a rule of thumb

Many explanations of German garnishment work with round numbers: “from about 1,600 euros”, “roughly 70 percent”. That is not enough for a real case. Garnishment moves in steps of €10, with an allowance exact to the cent and shares that depend on how many people you support. Two colleagues with almost the same net pay can therefore hand over different amounts if one of them has just crossed a step.

That is why the calculator works with the table itself. We read in the three tables of the 2026 exemption-limit notice and the three of the 2025 notice, for monthly, weekly and daily pay, and checked our calculation under section 850c ZPO against every single row. The result matches in all 1,847 rows and all six columns. An example with two dependants: of €3,200 net, €272.94 is attachable.

Then there is the bank account. The table protects your wages at your employer; once the money is paid in, the P-account allowance under section 899 ZPO applies instead. The two are often confused. The P-account calculator shows what stays in the account, and the account garnishment deadline tool gives the dates that matter.

German garnishment, step by step

How a wage garnishment works

It starts with an enforceable title: a judgment, an enforcement order or an enforceable settlement. With it, the creditor applies to the local court for a garnishment and transfer order (Pfändungs- und Überweisungsbeschluss). You are not heard beforehand. The order is served on your employer, called the third-party debtor, and from that day the garnishment is in effect under section 829(3) ZPO. A copy is served on you as well.

Within 2 weeks your employer must state whether it accepts the claim and whether other garnishments already exist (section 840 ZPO). From the next payday it deducts the attachable amount and pays it to the creditor until the debt, interest and costs are settled. The wage garnishment page estimates how long that takes; the employer’s duties are set out under employer duties.

Which net pay counts

The calculation uses net pay as defined in section 850e ZPO: gross pay minus income tax, solidarity surcharge, church tax and social insurance. Some payments come out first because section 850a ZPO protects them: half of any overtime pay, a customary holiday bonus, expense allowances and dirt or danger allowances within customary limits, and a Christmas bonus up to €795. If you have private health insurance, the customary premium is deducted like a social contribution.

The result is the net figure you look up in the table. With two jobs, each employer first works out its own share; the creditor can ask the court to combine both incomes, and then more becomes attachable. The difference is shown under multiple incomes.

The table changes every 1 July

The limits follow the basic income tax allowance. Under section 850c(4) ZPO they rise on 1 July by the percentage by which the basic allowance in section 32a EStG rose on 1 January compared with the year before. In 2026 that was just over two percent: the basic exempt amount went from €1,555.00 to €1,587.40 a month, the ceiling from €4,766.99 to €4,866.30.

The next table applies from 1 July 2027. It has not been published, and its level depends on the basic allowance that section 32a EStG sets for 2027. Until then the 2026 table stays unchanged. Under garnishment table 2027 you can test what a given rise would change, using your own assumption.

The P-account in three sentences

Everyone may have one current account run as a garnishment protection account, even if it is overdrawn; the bank must do so on request (section 850k ZPO). A P-account keeps €1,590 a month safe from garnishment, whether the money comes from wages, a pension or benefits. Whatever you do not use in one month stays protected for up to three following months.

More protection requires proof. For dependants, child benefit and certain benefits, the family benefits office, your employer or a recognised body issues a certificate, and the bank raises the allowance from the second business day after you hand it in. Work out the amount under P-account allowance 2026 and the dates under opening a P-account.

What can never be garnished

Some income is fully protected: basic income support under SGB II (section 42(4) SGB II), housing benefit, payments covering extra costs of a disability and the allowance for the blind. Parental allowance is protected up to €300 a month. Child benefit can only be reached by a child claiming maintenance.

Other income is treated like wages: pensions, unemployment benefit I and sickness benefit fall under the table (section 54(4) SGB I). The exempt income page has a quick check per type of income; pensions have their own pension garnishment calculator.

When a maintenance creditor garnishes

If a child or a former spouse garnishes for statutory maintenance, the table does not apply. Under section 850d ZPO the court may reach deeper and leaves you only what you need for your own necessary living costs and for maintenance creditors ranking ahead of or equal to the one enforcing. You may never keep more than the table would allow.

The order states the amount left to you; there is no table for it, and a serious site does not invent one. The calculator under maintenance garnishment takes the figure from your order and shows what your employer pays over and where the upper limit lies.

How we work

This site gives the figure without asking for your name, phone number or email, and it points you to no service provider. Every number comes from a file holding the values of the official notices and statutes with the date they were checked; no figure appears in the text that does not come from that file or from the calculator. Our last check was on 28 October 2026.

The publisher is Radif Partners, not a court or an advice service. The calculator replaces neither the order that applies to you nor legal advice. The page how we calculate explains the arithmetic and what we deliberately leave out; about us says who we are.

Common questions

Is anything I enter in the calculator stored or sent?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your net pay, your dependants and every other input stay on your device; there is no account and no form. The share link with your values is created by the browser only after you type something, and only you can pass it on. You can load the page and keep calculating offline.

From what net pay does garnishment start in 2026?

With no dependants, garnishment starts at €1,590 net a month; below that you keep all your pay. With one dependant the threshold is €2,190, with two €2,520. These values apply since 1 July 2026. Pay periods before that date are still worked out with the lower 2025 limits.

Who counts as a dependant for German garnishment?

Anyone you support because the law requires it: a spouse or registered partner, including a former one, children and, in rare cases, parents or a parent under section 1615l of the Civil Code. What matters is that you actually pay or provide maintenance in kind at home. An unmarried partner does not count. If such a person has income, the court may disregard them on application.

Does the garnishment table also apply to my bank account?

Not directly. Money in an account is protected by a P-account (Pfändungsschutzkonto): a fixed base of €1,590 a month, wherever the money comes from. Dependants, child benefit and certain social benefits raise the amount once you give the bank a certificate. Without a P-account the balance has no protection; any current account can be converted at your bank.

Do I have to act myself when the limits rise on 1 July?

Not for your wages: the employer applies the new table from the first pay period after the change, because the order refers to whichever table is in force. On a P-account the bank adjusts the base amount on its own too. Do check that any certificate for higher amounts still lists the right people and benefits.

Can I ask to keep more than the table allows?

Yes, by applying to the enforcement court under section 850f(1) ZPO. You must show that the exempt amount does not cover your necessary living costs as defined in social law, or that you have special personal or work-related needs, such as an illness or high travel costs. The court also weighs the creditor’s interests.

Is child benefit safe from garnishment in Germany?

From ordinary creditors, yes. Child benefit can only be garnished for the statutory maintenance of a child it is paid for (section 76 EStG). On a P-account it raises the allowance by €259 per child once the bank holds a certificate from the family benefits office or another authorised body.
